What electronic signature software does

Electronic signature software replaces the print-sign-scan loop. You upload a document, place fields where information belongs, and send it to the people who need to sign. They sign in a browser or on a phone — no account, no app, no printer.

The part that matters legally is what happens around the signature. Good e-signature software records who signed, when, from which IP address, and what exactly they saw at the moment they agreed. That record — the audit trail — is what makes a signed document defensible later. The signature image itself is the least important part of the file. If you still want a clean one to reuse, draw or type it with our free signature generator — it runs in your browser and downloads a transparent PNG.

What to look for

Most e-signature tools sign documents competently. They differ in what they charge for, what they keep, and what they can prove. Five things worth checking before you commit:

01 How it charges — per seat or per document

This is the single largest cost difference between platforms. Per-envelope pricing means every send draws down an allowance, and going over it costs extra or blocks the send. Per-seat pricing means you pay for the people, not the paperwork. Ask what happens on the 101st document of the month; the answer tells you the real price.

02 Whether the signature is legally binding where you operate

In the US, the ESIGN Act and UETA make electronic signatures enforceable for most agreements. In the EU, eIDAS does the same and additionally defines three tiers (see below). Canada has PIPEDA. A handful of document types — wills, some property transfers, certain court filings — are commonly excluded everywhere, so check your jurisdiction for those.

03 What the audit trail actually contains

A timestamp alone is weak evidence. Look for a tamper-evident record: a cryptographic hash of the signed document, so any later alteration is detectable, plus per-signer identity, IP and consent events. Signatura seals every completed document with SHA-256 and publishes a verification endpoint anyone can check the file against.

04 What happens to your documents

Your contracts are among the most sensitive files your business has. Two questions are worth asking any vendor in writing: are my documents used to train AI models, and can I get all of them out if I leave? Signatura does not train models on customer documents, and export is available at any time.

05 Whether you can leave

Migration is where e-signature contracts quietly get sticky. Before you sign up, find out how completed documents and their certificates export, and what happens to envelopes still in flight when a subscription ends. If a vendor cannot answer that in one sentence, treat it as a cost.

The three types of electronic signature

Under eIDAS, "electronic signature" covers three levels of assurance. Most business agreements need the first; the higher tiers exist for regulated cases.

Simple (SES)

A signature captured electronically — typed, drawn or clicked — with a record of intent. This is what the large majority of commercial contracts, NDAs, offer letters and consent forms use, and it is enforceable under ESIGN, UETA and eIDAS.

Advanced (AES)

Uniquely linked to the signer, capable of identifying them, and created so that any subsequent change to the document is detectable. This is where a cryptographic seal over the document stops being a nice-to-have.

Qualified (QES)

An advanced signature backed by a qualified certificate issued by an EU-accredited trust service provider, created on qualified hardware. QES is the only tier that carries the same legal weight as a handwritten signature automatically across the EU. It is required for a narrow set of regulated documents.

How Signatura is built

One plan. Every feature is in it. The per-seat rate falls as the team grows, and nothing is metered by document.

From $24 per seat / month billed annually, falling to $10.50 per seat as the team grows.

Your documents are never used to train AI models. Export everything, any time.

Common questions

Is electronic signature software legally binding?

Yes, for most agreements. In the United States the ESIGN Act (2000) and UETA give electronic signatures the same legal effect as handwritten ones. The EU's eIDAS regulation and Canada's PIPEDA do the same in their jurisdictions. The usual exclusions are wills, certain property transfers and some court filings — categories where local law still requires paper or notarisation.

What is the difference between an electronic signature and a digital signature?

An electronic signature is the legal concept: any electronic mark made with intent to sign. A digital signature is one cryptographic technique for producing one, using a certificate and a key pair. Every digital signature is an electronic signature; not every electronic signature is digital. In practice, vendors use the terms loosely, so read what the product actually does rather than which word it uses.

How much does electronic signature software cost?

It depends almost entirely on the pricing model. Per-envelope platforms typically bundle an allowance — often 100 sends a year on entry plans — and charge for overage. Per-seat platforms charge for people. Signatura is per seat: from $24 per seat per month on the annual plan, falling to $10.50 per seat as the team grows, and no per-document charge at any volume.

Do signers need an account?

No. Signers receive a link, open it in any browser, and sign. They do not create an account, install software or pay anything. Only the people sending documents need a seat.

What is an audit trail and why does it matter?

The audit trail is the evidence record attached to a completed document: who signed, when, from where, what they were shown, and when they consented to sign electronically. If a signature is ever disputed, this record — not the signature image — is what gets examined. Signatura additionally seals the finished document with a SHA-256 hash, so any later modification is detectable.

Can I switch from DocuSign or Adobe Acrobat Sign?

Yes. Export your completed documents and their certificates of completion from your current provider first — those stay valid as records regardless of where you sign in future — then move new sends over. It is worth running both in parallel until every in-flight envelope has closed.

Are my documents used to train AI?

No. Signatura does not train AI models on your content. The one feature that uses AI is Auto-Sign, which proposes where fields belong on a document you upload; it is opt-in per session, and the pages are sent to Anthropic’s API for real-time analysis under a data processing agreement that prohibits training on customer inputs. Only the result — field positions and types, not document content — comes back, and it is cached for at most an hour. Our sub-processors are listed publicly and a DPA is available.

What happens to my documents if I cancel?

You can export your documents at any time, including after cancelling. Completed documents and their audit trails remain verifiable through the public verification endpoint, because verification checks the file's hash rather than requiring an active account.
